2. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

PRESS RELEASE - 23 MARCH 2021 - TWO NORTH AYRSHIRE PROJECTS SET TO BENEFIT FROM SPORT FACILITIES FUNDING

It’s celebration time for more clubs, communities and leisure trusts across Scotland as they receive a share of over £900,000 of investment in the latest round of awards from sportscotland’s Sport Facilities Fund.

Glengarnock Ironworks Bowling Club and Inspire, Motivate, Celebrate boxing club will both benefit from investment and ongoing support from sportscotland to realise their ambitions of improving access to sport and physical activity in their local area. This investment is made possible thanks to National Lottery players who raise £30 million each week for good causes across the UK.

Glengarnock Ironworks Bowling Club are set to receive £50,000 to extend their existing clubhouse. The club already engages with several community groups such as local schools, stroke recovery groups, dementia sufferers, asylum seeker befriending groups, and those experiencing social isolation. The development will improve the accessibility of the clubhouse and create a safer, more appropriate environment for the club to not only cater to those groups, but to expand its offering to youth projects, rehab and social inclusion programmes.

Minister for Public Health and Sport, Mairi Gougeon, said:

“This latest investment from sportscotland’s Sport Facilities Fund will help make a real impact in communities across Scotland. Over the last year we have seen the vital role sport and physical activity has played in supporting our communities to stay connected and be more active.

“I’m pleased to hear that more projects are benefitting from this latest round of funding which will support local projects to ensure more diverse and inclusive opportunities are available in communities whilst increasing access to sport for all.”

Chief Executive of sportscotland, Stewart Harris, said:

“It is fantastic to see the ambition and commitment from the people behind these projects who are working together to improve the lives of their local communities.

“We know that sport and physical activity can play a part in Scotland’s recovery from COVID-19. Facilities like these will not only allow more people to participate but can also provide a place for communities to come together and support one another as we work our way out of these challenging times.

James Gibson, Trustee of Glengarnock Ironworks Bowling and Community Club welcomed the investment:

“On behalf of the Trustees and members of Glengarnock Ironworks Bowling and Community Club, we are delighted to hear that sportscotland will be supporting our plans for the redevelopment of our facilities.

“There have been sporting activities taking place on the site since 1858 and this grant award will enable the charity to extend its reach into the community and improve the facilities for future use. We have further ambitious plans which we hope to integrate with the wider Lochshore Development plans currently being consulted upon by North Ayrshire Council. We are also extremely grateful to Bowls Scotland for their support and encouragement.”
